Daily, passersby would skirt its perimeter, glancing at its mute walls and shuttered windows before moving on. In the collective memory, it dissolved into a mere ancient ruin, a piece of the customary landscape that no longer invited a second look.

A Slow Death Met with Indifference

The ultimate irony remains that its fate was sealed on paper years before its actual collapse. On April 28, 2020, an official demolition decree was issued and published in Al-Waqai’al-Misriya (The Egyptian Chronicles), Issue No. 98 of 2020. Yet, the structure endured, anchored to its spot as if postponing its final appointment, or granting the city one last reprieve to reclaim a fragment of its memory before it vanished into the ether.

Then came last Friday morning, and Port Said awoke to its destruction. The true shock lay not in the demolition itself, but in the sudden, collective realization that this building had existed all these years, waiting for someone to notice it, to rescue it from its slow death, and to breathe life back into its bones.

This structure was no mere decrepit building whose lifespan had expired; it was one of the few surviving witnesses to the city’s earliest infancy. The very ground upon which it stood traces its lineage back to the days when Port Said was forging itself out of the sea.

As the waters receded northward, abandoning what became known as Tarh al-Bahr (reclaimed coastal lands), the city’s inaugural streets emerged. Upon one of these thoroughfares, the narrative took root. At the city’s genesis, the street was known as “Eugénie’s Quay,” named for Empress Eugénie, wife of the French Emperor Napoleon III. Her name became inextricably linked to the grand opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, when she arrived in Egypt amidst legendary celebrations that turned the eyes of the entire world toward the newborn city.

Names eventually shifted and maps morphed, yet the name Eugénie continued to evoke an era when Port Said served as a window flung wide open onto the Mediterranean, Europe, and the world all at once.

The Greek historian Demetrios Chaldoupis reveals in his book, Events and Memories of Port Said, that the site did not begin its life as a post office or a government facility. Instead, 1868 witnessed the establishment of Port Said’s very first cabaret for tourists, named “La Cigale” (The Cicada). Its presence crystallized the character of the nascent city, a melting pot where laborers, engineers, merchants, and adventurers hailing from dozens of nationalities converged.

The French Post Office building in Port Said prior to its demolition – Photo: Osama Kamal

A Nightclub to Solace the Laborers

In those formative years, music operated as one of the city’s foundational languages. The populace grew intimately acquainted with celebrated foreign troupes such as the “International,” the “Eftra,” and the “Lyra,” which performed across squares, public spaces, and dedicated nightlife venues.

Celebrations erupted on every conceivable occasion, from the anniversaries of the French Republic to imperial birthdays, and from welcoming Khedive Ismail to the private galas of the Canal Company. Ottoman and French flags hoisted in tandem above the city, while fireworks illuminated the sky and melodies mingled with the sighs of the sea.

Perhaps the most telling paradox is that this building, which began its life as a raucous nightclub welcoming music, dance, and nocturnal revelers of various nationalities, stood a mere few meters from the first Khawla (prayer retreat) or Zawiya (small prayer space) known to the European Quarter. There, the patriarch of the Al-Qusaifi family established a small prayer niche near the harbor, offering a sanctuary for laborers and sailors to pray.

It was as though the newborn city harbored two disparate worlds within a single plot: the clamor of music on one side, and the whisper of prayer on the other. It perceived no contradiction in this, viewing it instead as an intrinsic element of its complex identity, born from the synthesis of peoples, cultures, and tongues.

Yet, the underbelly of this boisterous life was never far away. Chaldoupis writes of frequent brawls breaking out among foreign nationals, of assaults tied to entertainment houses and brothels, and of ceaseless complaints regarding the lawlessness that accompanied those early years.

As the phenomenon expanded and its complications multiplied, the city appeared to search for a greater measure of stability and order.

From this friction emerged one of the most striking transmutations in the site’s history. The location that people once frequented as Port Said’s premier cabaret transformed over time into the headquarters of the French Post Office. It was as if the city exchanged the din of late-night revelers for the flow of correspondence, and ephemeral amusement for the disciplined rhythm of daily life. No longer did the venue play host to music and dance; instead, it welcomed letters, parcels, and dispatches arriving from across the seas.

Securing the Correspondence of European Nations

Through Chaldoupis, we also learn that foreign postal services were an extension of the system of foreign capitulations that governed nineteenth-century Egypt. Before the Egyptian state established its modern domestic postal network, European powers erected their own offices to secure their correspondence.

The historian notes that the final two French post offices in Egypt operated out of Alexandria and Port Said, and their abolition in 1919 closed a lengthy chapter in the history of foreign postal services within the country.

The image of the building at the zenith of its presence emerges from the pages of the Greek historian George Soltanaki in his volume on the Canal cities. There, the classical stone structure appears clad in limestone, composed of a ground floor surmounted by a single upper story. Rectangular windows flanked elegant arches on the ground level, while colossal columns dominated the facade overlooking the street.

Should a visitor breach the main gateway, they found themselves before an internal courtyard open to the sky, around which distributed the windows offering postal services, from selling stamps to dispatching and receiving letters and parcels. The building commanded a singular presence in the consciousness of the city’s residents, so much so that the entire thoroughfare was known for generations as “Post Office Street.”

The building never stood isolated from its surroundings. It formed an integral piece of the French aesthetic that took shape in Port Said alongside the villas of the Canal Company, the old lighthouse, the Delferande Hospital, and other structures bearing French architectural hallmarks. The entire city resembled an open-air architectural museum, where disparate styles coexisted without clashing.

The demolition of the French Post Office building – Photo: Osama Kamal

The demolition of the French Post Office building – Photo: Osama Kamal

A Structure of Singular Merit

The architecture of that epoch relied upon lengthy Bawaki (arcades) that sheltered pedestrians from sun and rain, upon wooden balconies known to locals as Terrassat (terraces), and upon robust timber frames and walls constructed of limestone and burnt brick. The French Post Office building was nothing less than one of the finest iterations of that architectural school which bestowed upon Port Said its peerless personality.

The archival minutes of the old Port Said Municipality breathe an intimate, human life back into the building. During a session on May 13, 1916, a council member lodged a complaint against a laundryman who routinely hung soiled garments to dry in front of the French Post Office. The incident appears minor and fleeting, yet it underscores how the building had evolved into a daily landmark by which everyone navigated and described locations, to the extent that its name entered the records of municipal debates.

Becoming the Stronghold of the Nasr Television Company

Just as the city underwent a metamorphosis, the function of the building shifted once more. From 1960 onward, it became the headquarters for the Nasr Television Company, one of the fruits of the grand industrial project that Egypt experienced during its industrialization years. The site transitioned from receiving overseas letters to manufacturing apparatuses that transmitted sight and sound directly into homes.

For decades, the building executed its new role faithfully until its twilight journey commenced in the late 1990s. Production lines ground to a halt incrementally, and the door to early retirement swung open for workers in 1998, a consequence of the company’s inability to compete with imported modern televisions and screens. Subsequently, a liquidation decree was handed down, and equipment was put up for sale in public auctions to settle accumulated debts that reached approximately 280 million Egyptian pounds.

With the departure of the company, the building’s final inhabitants vacated, inaugurating a protracted chapter of silence and oblivion.

A Port Said Narrative Reduced to Deserted Ruins

Thus, the chronicle of the French Post Office mirrors the biography of Port Said itself. A building that began as a nightclub in a newborn city, matured into an international postal hub, and transitioned into an industrial facility, before culminating as a deserted ruin awaiting its doom. With each iteration, it shed one skin to don another, while the surrounding city continuously altered its countenances, names, and dreams.

The collapse of the walls in June 2026 was perhaps nothing more than the delayed execution of a decree issued six years prior. Yet, what the bulldozers dismantled was not merely a structure that had lost its utility, but an entire stratum of the city’s memory, and one of the rarest witnesses to accompany Port Said from its very first days.

When its walls finally crumbled, it was not mere stone and timber that collapsed. It was an entire chapter from the city’s ledger, a page inscribed by successive generations in different languages, dialects, and dreams, left open to the wind, the salt, and the sea, until the day arrived when it was closed forever.

A look at the sudden demolition of Port Said’s historic French Post Office, tracing its journey from a 19th-century cabaret to an industrial relic and a lost layer of the city’s soul.
