A journey through analog memory, music, and storytelling.

By Mahmoud Dowair

In the heart of Damanhur, a single street still guards the intricate remnants of one of the oldest tales of the cassette trade. Here, anchored to a storefront that came to define the collective memory and sonic identity of an entire era, lies a sanctuary from a time when the cassette tape was the primary window into music and romance. It was a vessel through which songs crossed into the hearts of listeners, carving out the contours of love affairs and relationships that stretched from the pavements of the street into the privacy of homes. In those days, romantic cassettes and their melodies served as both witness and messenger for the lovelorn.

The Genesis of ‘Sawt El Hob El Gadeed’

The story of Khaled Younis, the proprietor of Sawt El Hob El Gadeed (The New Voice of Love), began early. His visceral passion for music drove him to continuously purchase cassettes at a time when a single tape cost no more than three and a half Egyptian pounds. Over time, this hobby matured into a profound devotion to the world of audiocassettes and song. After graduating from the Faculty of Arts at Alexandria University and traveling abroad for a spell, he returned to Egypt determined to enter the cassette trade, fueled by pure affection for the craft. Step by step, he mastered the intricacies of the market, from production and distribution to the shifting tides of supply and demand, ultimately opening his boutique in 1986, where he would labor for decades.

As the relentless march of technology progressed, the cassette industry faced a slow, inevitable decline, accelerated by the ubiquity of mobile phones and mutating listening habits. Production companies began scaling back tape manufacturing, pivoting instead toward the Compact Disc (CD), which achieved widespread dominance between 2006 and 2007. Yet, even though the CD represented the zenith of modernity, its exorbitant cost at the time restricted its reach; a single disc commanded nearly 30 pounds, compared to the modest 18 pounds of a cassette. Furthermore, CD players were far from a staple in every household, a reality that granted the humble cassette a prolonged lease on life. Younis recalls that when he first opened his doors, a tape cost three and a half pounds, with prices escalating at an average annual creep of about half a pound, until Amr Diab’s albums eventually reached 12 pounds. He vividly remembers how Asala’s seminal album Law Ta’rafou (If You Only Knew) triggered an absolute frenzy in distribution, with its price soaring at times to 18 and 20 pounds during the dawn of the millennium, driven by insatiable demand and absolute scarcity.

Khaled Younis, proprietor of Sawt El Hob El Gadeed. Photo: Mahmoud Dowair

Tangible Distribution and the Architecture of Success

Khaled Younis maintains that commercial success in the cassette market never hinged solely on artistic merit, but rather on the sheer volume of physical distribution during the crucial opening weeks of a release, a metric that mirrored an album’s true popularity. The standalone single played a fundamental role in driving sales; a single hit track was potent enough to compel the public to purchase an entire album, even if the remaining tracks failed to match its caliber. Consequently, production houses focused heavily on selecting the titular track, marketing it aggressively through early radio airplay and television broadcasts. The very nature of the market also fostered a state of temporary scarcity for wildly successful releases, as manufacturing lines struggled to satisfy the compounding demand, thereby inflating the album’s prestige and doubling the fervor of consumers. Younis adds that the cassette industry in Egypt enjoyed a golden age of prosperity for many years, sustained by an integrated ecosystem of specialized factories and workshops, spanning from the manufacturing of blank tapes to the printing of sleeves and inserts, all the way to distribution syndicates and commercial music libraries, an industry that provided livelihoods for a vast workforce.

When the cassette market contracted and operations ground to a gradual halt, this entire ecosystem collapsed, forcing countless workers in the distribution chain to pivot their commercial activities and migrate to other trades.

The Dawn of the Crisis: The Advent of Mobile Phones

The crisis of the cassette industry began in earnest with the rise and penetration of mobile phones. The tape trade collapsed almost completely, particularly after the raw materials required for recording blank tapes vanished from the market, gradually transforming the profession from a thriving commercial enterprise into an artifact of heritage and artistic memory.

Younis explains that a dedicated subculture of connoisseurs still seeks out vintage cassettes today, not merely for the act of listening, but to preserve them within private archives dedicated to specific artists. He notes that certain patrons are fiercely committed to collecting the complete discographies of specific vocalists, such as Mayada El Hennawy and Warda.

Despite the twilight of the medium, demand endures for rare tapes. Younis points out that his stock of Mohamed Mounir cassettes is virtually depleted due to relentless inquiries, while the classical heritage tapes of titans like Farid El Atrash and Mohamed Abdel Wahab still draw significant traffic from purists of musical history.

He notes that the catalogs of certain artists remain sought after to this day, among them the late Farid El Atrash. He recalls a particular patron who bought out his entire inventory of El Atrash tapes with the sole ambition of curating a definitive private archive.

The Cassette Tapes of Beheira. Photo: Mahmoud Dowair

The Mixtape: High Premium and Ultimate Ubiquity

Regarding what became widely known as the cocktail (mixtape), Khaled recounts that he pioneered this practice in the 1990s, when the custom mixtape reigned as one of his most requested items. Songs were meticulously sequenced within the tape to unfold as a seamless musical dialogue. Some mixtapes were custom-crafted for romantic occasions and engagements, utilizing premium-grade magnetic tape that commanded prices as high as 50 pounds at the time.

He explains that the mastering of these tapes took place within professional studios to ensure optimum acoustic fidelity, while his shop earned a reputation for swift execution, a factor that heightened demand until the street itself became known among locals as “Sawt El Hob Street,” an homage to his shop. He notes that he dealt exclusively with the official agents of major production companies to guarantee the quality of his tapes and prevent the circulation of pirated bootlegs. His inventory spanned Arab and international music houses, alongside distributors of Quranic recitations and religious materials. His enterprise was not confined to Arabic songs but extended to Western music, which required an intimate knowledge of various genres, including rock, disco, metal, and classical music. Furthermore, certain foreign cassettes included translated lyric booklets, which earned them immense popularity among the youth.

He asserts that the value of certain tapes today is intrinsically tied to their rarity, particularly vintage pressings that have vanished from the market, such as early albums by Mohamed Mounir and Hamid El Shaeri, which have transitioned into rare collectibles pursued by aficionados.

Titans of the Nineties: Mohamed Fouad, Mounir, and El Haggar

Khaled Younis recalls that the musical palate of cassette consumers was remarkably diverse. While the youth gravitated toward the luminaries of the nineties like Mohamed Fouad, Mohamed Mounir, and Ali El Haggar, a loyal audience remained steadfastly devoted to the giants of classical Tarab (enchanting classical singing) such as Abdel Halim Hafez, Umm Kulthum, Farid El Atrash, Nagat El Saghira, and Sayed Mekawy.

Concurrently, shaabi (folkloric working-class music) tapes enjoyed a sweeping popularity, especially the works of the late Ramadan El Prince, alongside Bedouin song, which found a fertile market among the inhabitants of the Beheira governorate, particularly within the hubs of Hosh Eissa, Abu Hummus, El Delengat, and Wadi El Natrun. He notes that he did not personally trade in the Bedouin genre due to the presence of specialized merchants and companies dedicated to this specific sonic color, firms that monopolized the production and distribution of works by Bedouin vocalists like Awad El Malki, Abu Khsheim, and others.

Cassette Tapes. Khaled reminisces about names that commanded a powerful, localized mass presence in the city, such as Mohamed Moheb and Osama El Omda, as well as the songstress Shafika, whose cassettes were pressed in Tanta and Damanhur, yet went on to achieve massive sales figures across the length and breadth of Egypt.

He conjures up memories of love stories inextricably bound to these custom mixtapes, explaining that young men would request the curation of an entirely romantic tape, only for the fiancée to return days later requesting a counter-mixtape, replying to the exact same songs in an equally passionate musical dialogue. Reflecting on the monumental albums that created genuine cultural phenomena, he cites Asala’s Law Ta’rafou and Ali Hamida’s Lowlakee (If Not For You), which he describes as an anomaly that completely revolutionized the landscape of the market at the time. Khaled Younis concludes by affirming that Amr Diab was an exceptional, singular force; the moment his albums dropped, they transformed instantly into a public phenomenon that set the entire Egyptian street in motion.

Why Do They Still Seek the Relics of the Cassette Era?

Khaled Younis stresses that despite the structural collapse of the cassette market beginning in 2008, demand has experienced a resurgence over the past five years, particularly from dedicated collectors in Egypt, the Gulf states, and Europe. He routinely receives requests from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the Sultanate of Oman, England, and Belgium from patrons seeking rare, original pressings.

Though the cassette has vanished from the rituals of daily utility, an enduring segment of the public continues to hunt for vintage tapes, whether to experience their specific warmth or to preserve them within private collections, viewing them as historical artifacts charged with sentimental value and memories anchored to a vastly different epoch.

He confirms that the artists whose tapes remain in perpetual demand are George Wassouf, Amr Diab, Mohamed Fouad, Ragheb Alama, and Mohamed Mounir, alongside the titans of classical Tarab like Farid El Atrash, Mohamed Abdel Wahab, Abdel Halim Hafez, Nagat, Fayza Ahmed, and Fairuz.

To this day, Khaled Younis jealously guards a collection of rare tapes that he resolutely refuses to sell, including vintage recordings of Shafika, George Wassouf, and the Damanhurian crooner Osama El Omda, among others. To him, these plastic shells and magnetic tapes do not merely contain sound; they represent the preserved interiority and living memory of an entire generation.

How cassette tapes shaped generations in Beheira, Egypt.
