Originally conceived to fortify social bonds, it has matured over decades into a continuous financial cooperative. This system relies on revolving contributions among residents, anchored by a collective sense of readiness and communal participation. The ritual begins with the payment of a sum known as Nuqout<\/em> to the host of an occasion. This exchange is overseen by a professional accountant stationed at a desk within a Siwan<\/em> (a majestic ceremonial pavilion) erected specifically for the event. With meticulous precision, the accountant records each contribution in a ledger featuring dedicated columns for the donor\u2019s name, the date, the amount, and the specific occasion be it a wedding or a Tuhoor<\/em> (circumcision ceremony) transforming a simple gesture into a cornerstone of the city\u2019s intangible cultural heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orchestration and Organization<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Mohammed Abu Al-Ala, a veteran operator within the Nuqout<\/em> circuit, explains that managing these collections requires strict adherence to local protocol. The first requirement is ample notice, often spanning three to seven months. During this period, organizers coordinate with specialized printers to produce banners that are draped across the city. This is followed by the printing of invitation cards, which specify the time and location of the “Collection Night.” On the reverse of each card, the specific amount owed to the host is clearly inscribed. Occasionally, advertisements are plastered onto Tuk-tuks or placed prominently along public thoroughfares. A night is then dedicated to the gathering. Notably, the event need not be a wedding; it might be staged to fund a new business venture or to recoup sums the host has paid out to others over the years. These events are often held under the guise of celebrating a son\u2019s Tuhoor<\/em> or as a general “invitation to celebrate” with a specific patriarch or family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the financial transaction, the night serves as a zenith of communal life. Men greet one another with warm embraces and traditional kisses, renewing ties. They dine in an area secluded from the main pavilion before fulfilling their financial duties. If a guest pays more than their previous obligation, the surplus is recorded as a debt owed by the host, to be repaid with interest during a future event. Thus, the cycle of Nuqout<\/em> continues, unceasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Art of the Salute<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Mohammed Al-Sayyad, a Nabatchi<\/em> (the master of ceremonies or “shouter”), explains a secondary custom: the Tahiyya<\/em> (salutation). Every guest entering the pavilion is expected to greet the assembly through the Nabatchi<\/em>. For a fee determined by the guest\u2019s personal flair, means, or social standing the Nabatchi<\/em> bellows their name and greeting into the “crystal” (the microphone). These performers essentially “buy” the rights to the night from the host. As guests depart after paying their main Nuqout<\/em>, they tip the microphone operator sums ranging from 10 to 200 pounds. Crucially, these tips are considered separate and are never recorded in the formal ledgers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scale of the event is dictated by the host’s means. A groom typically bears the cost of two pavilions: one before his home and another before the bride’s. The system is so deeply understood and respected that, despite the vast sums involved, not a single lawsuit has been filed regarding Nuqout<\/em> debts or arrears in all these years. Mahmoud Al-Bajouri, a local teacher, observes variations of the custom that fall outside the “repayment” rule. One such example is the Nuqout<\/em> of the barber. On the wedding day, the groom invites his regular barber to his home. Friends and family gather from all corners to witness the grooming, often accompanied by Daff<\/em> (tambourine) troupes. As the barber works, guests tuck money into the towel draped around the groom\u2019s neck. Once finished, the barber claims the entire contents of the towel as a personal windfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other gifts include sponsoring a Zaffat al-Khail<\/em> (an ornate horse dance) or hiring a folk singing troupe to perform in honor of the couple. While these gestures are not recorded in the official books, they are often reciprocated in kind during future celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Women\u2019s Circle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Ibrahim Balah, an event outfitter, highlights the robust female parallel to this system. A large number of women in Kafr al-Battikh have established their own Nuqout<\/em> collectives, functioning strictly as a women-only Jam’iyyah<\/em> (savings circle). They employ their own female accountant to manage the ledger. Unlike the men\u2019s events, which are tied to specific dates, these funds are often distributed based on the members’ needs. The women meet with the accountant to present their circumstances, and she determines who receives the payout.
